International Studies

The world is an increasingly interconnected place. Those who learn to work and live within this relational framework often succeed where others falter. Prepare to become an informed and engaged citizen of the world by majoring in international studies at JAVĿ¼.

The international studies program is designed to prepare you to enter the global arena confident in your ability to address contemporary world issues from an interdisciplinary perspective. Through this program, you will be introduced to various disciplinary approaches by taking courses that explore world politics, cultures, religions, economics, and contemporary affairs.

As an international studies major, you will be required to spend at least one semester during your junior year studying abroad. Choose from scores of academic programs offered by international universities and colleges in Europe, Latin America, Australia, Asia, and Africa.

Program Overview

A total of 36 credit hours is required for a bachelor of arts degree in international studies. You will take a number of classes from each of two categories: functional studies and area studies. Functional studies examine topics such as international economics and political systems. Area studies courses focus on particular cultures and civilizations throughout the world.

In addition, you will study another language of your choice. The program also provides for individual interests through a senior thesis, which you will defend before faculty and interested members of the JAVĿ¼ community.
