Welcome Weekend: Orientation Helps Students Get into the Groove

August 16, 2023

Welcome Weekend 2023 begins with First-Year Move-In Day on Saturday, Sept. 2 and runs through the weekend until Matriculation and the start of classes on Tuesday, Sept. 5.

JAVĿ¼ students dance during an Orientation event in 2022.

The University’s Orientation program is designed to help students discover what JAVĿ¼ has to offer, connect with friends, and acclimate to college life. This year’s theme is “JAVĿ¼ Fest,” and guarantees to help students find their groove on campus.

Move-In Day is all about getting comfortable on campus! Once you’re settled into your residence hall room, the whirlwind of Orientation begins. Meet your hallmates during a floor meeting held by your residence assistant then head to the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Athletic Center Fieldhouse for Orientation Kick-Off.

Starting at 7 p.m., JAVĿ¼ First Night is the place to be for music, food, and fun! For students who like a more relaxed atmosphere, head to the sensory friendly room in the COP, located on the second floor of the Donald E. Bain Campus Center. Then, end the night by playing Boom Boom Bingo for a chance to win some fun prizes or heading to Basil 135 to watch “Pitch Perfect” with friends (with popcorn, of course).

The second day of Orientation is a mix of presentations and activities designed to get you ready for life at JAVĿ¼. Enjoy breakfast with your Orientation group before heading to a series of campus information presentations.  At 3 p.m., JAVĿ¼Fest will feature live music, food trucks, crafts, tie-dye, and more! After dinner, join Student Government Association (SGA) for Speed Make-A-Friend to meet some new friends, or take your pick among karaoke, Chapel Night, live entertainment, and board games.

Orientation really gets going on Monday, where you’ll be introduced to your First-Year Seminar class and advisors at the Center for Career and Academic Planning. After lunch, you’ll hear more about life at JAVĿ¼, and be able to walk your schedule and see where each of your classes will be held. At 4 p.m., your Orientation Leaders will bring you to the Polisseni Track and Field Complex for the Class of 2027 group photo. After dinner, test your “fun fact” knowledge at Trivia Night with Game Night Roc as Week of Welcome begins for all students.

On Tuesday, you’ll officially mark the start of your academic career at JAVĿ¼. Meet with your academic department (check your JAVĿ¼ email for details), then attend the Matriculation Ceremony. At 1:40 p.m., grab your iPad, notebook, and backpack, and head to class!
