JAVĿ¼ Student Presents Research in France
Paige Denman, a senior biochemistry major from Buffalo, New York, had the opportunity this summer to present a research project in Lyon, France.
Denman completed the study alongside their organic chemistry professor, Dr. Alexey Ignatchenko, over the course of several months. The project used a computer program to simulate a compound and manipulate it to find trends.
“I’ve always been interested in research, and I wanted to do something that related to my major,” said Denman. “I wanted to also help myself better understand what I wanted to do after I graduate.”
Denman was presented the opportunity to attend the International Congress on Catalysis (ICC) in France, which is organized by the International Association of Catalysis Societies.
Denman recalls being one of the youngest attendees of the conference, surrounded by many doctoral students and academics.
“I was able to talk to a lot of people and get a lot of really cool ideas from people. I loved talking to other PhD students,” they said.
Denman describes their enjoyment of research stemming from the independence that it often comes with, along with the findings portion. “I enjoy just kind of figuring stuff out and if it doesn't work, I love figuring out maybe why it didn't work or what I can do to make sure it works the next time,” they said.
Denman said they feel pride looking back at their research from their sophomore year compared to where they are at now in their academic career.
“I feel super proud of myself for really stepping up and doing this research, really advocating for myself and taking this opportunity,” Denman said. “These professors are there for me, or any of the science students along the way. It’s super nice to have such a good community like that.”
Denman is currently continuing research with Dr. Kevin Callahan, associate professor, as part of the Honors Program. They intend to apply to graduate school with interest in a biochemical or chemistry program.
